Continent Scavenger Hunt

This scavenger hunt is designed to be engaging and fun – helping children to gain a greater familiarity of the continent shapes, while supporting developing observation skills and gross motor movement through active exploration. This activity is excellent for multi-age groups and can be adapted for indoor or outdoor play.

Preparation:

Print and cut the coloured continent cards. Prepare the silhouette checklist; provide one for each child participating and place them in a designated starting area alongside pencils/markers. Hide the continent picture cards in various places around the classroom, outdoor space, or home (ensure the hiding spots are age-appropriate and safe for exploration).

Main Activity:

1. Invite the child to join you and introduce the activity: "Today, we are going on a continent scavenger hunt! You will search for continent cards that I have hidden around the room. Once you find a card, you will check it off on your silhouette checklist." (optional: save one continent picture card to show as an example – remember to hide it once the child is looking elsewhere)
2. Show the child the checklist and explain how to use it: "Here are the shapes of the continents. When you find a card, look at its shape and check off the matching silhouette."
3. Demonstrate with an example (optional): Pretend to find a hidden continent card, compare it to the checklist, and check it off.
4. Encourage the child to begin searching: "Now it’s your turn to find the continents. Let’s see if you can find all seven!"

Extensions and Extra Tips:

• Where possible, allow the child to search independently, providing encouragement and assistance if needed. If multiple children are participating in the scavenger hunt, encourage collaboration where appropriate.
• If a single child is completing this scavenger hunt in a home setting, invite the child to name each continent aloud when they find its picture card.
• After completing the scavenger hunt, use a globe or a world map to discuss where each continent is located.
• This activity can be repeated and extended in a variety of ways, here are a few ideas: write 'secret' letters on the back of each continent picture card and have the child record them in the corresponding boxes – the letters could spell a word or phrase that leads to 'treasure' (e.g., 'cabinet', 'in a book', 'on a desk' etc.); place simple sums or numbers written as words (e.g., seven, six, ten) on the back of each picture card and have child record the answers or numerals in the checklist box; write numbers in the checklist boxes before handing it to the child, explain that these numbers are a key to order 'mystery' words into a sentence, tell the child the 'mystery' words are hiding on the back of the continent picture cards, have the child collect the cards and use the key to reveal the mystery sentence – this sentence may be an instruction or clue to find some hidden 'treasure'. Carefully consider the age and ability of the children participating when preparing their scavenger hunt.
